George Eustice MP was interviewed by Jeremy Paxman on the BBC's Newsnight programme last night. The topic of the day was the European Commission's proposals to increase its budget yet again by up to 5% above inflation, as well as plans to levy its own taxes.
The Dutch Green Party MEP, Bas Eickhourt, argued in favour of the proposals, citing the variety of integrated services the EU has to offer. However, when pressed by Mr Paxman, the Dutchman failed to mount a defence of proposals to increase the EU entertainment budget by 85%.
George dismissed the proposals out of hand saying, "At a time when every member state's budget is being slashed it is ludicrous for the EU to be asking for more money. The quickest way for the EU to make cuts is to get out of so many areas, and let member states take their own lead.
The EU should be streamlined so that it does a few things well, rather than so many things badly. The EU as it stands is a failed institution"
In response, Mr Eickhourt said, "Of course the EU has failed"...
