George Eustice MP appeared on BBC Newsnight last night calling for greater regulation of the published press. In an interview with Jeremy Paxman, George said that recent revelations marked a 'turning point' but that something good will come out of this, and that 'the professionalism of the media can be restored'.
Putting forward proposals for more rigid regulation of printed media, George commented, "I think we need to somehow separate the proprietors from the editorial decisions in journalism. In broadcasting, even in the private companies, you don’t have something senior dictating what you should do. There is a proper code, and if you do make mistakes, there are big fines and you have to put it right- giving the same prominence to a correction as you did to the original story."
