On Tuesday 13th February, Alison Hernandez, Devon and Cornwall’s Police & Crime Commissioner, visited Camborne and Redruth to see how ‘Safer Streets’ funding is being used to impact crimes such as Violence Against Women and Girls, Neighbourhood Crime, and Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB).
The Commissioner met local partners and stakeholders including Town and County Councillors before walking around various ‘ASB hotspots’ in Camborne. She met with the Street Marshalls employed in the town and heard their perspective on the projects impact in the town.
This was followed by a visit to Hideaway 77 Youth Cafe in Redruth, where Safer Streets funded projects are helping to engage young people. The Commissioner spent time with the young people themselves and the specialist youth workers who are delivering programmes which educate young people in Healthy Relationships and other positive peer work.
Safer Streets funding has enabled the following package of safety measures to be implemented across the two towns by April 2025;
- Streetlighting upgrades on key arterial and ‘walk home’ routes from the towns
- CCTV upgrades with increased coverage and functionality
- Street marshals to provide a visible & reassuring presence in the town centres
- A dedicated anti-social behaviour (ASB) caseworker will provide a visible presence within the area and will challenge ASB and crime where appropriate, gather intelligence and share with partner agencies. They will also seek to look after people’s welfare and signpost vulnerable individuals to relevant support services.
- A dedicated young persons drug and alcohol outreach worker employed by WeAreWithYou (YZUP) to support young people at risk of or engaged in drug use & ASB.
- Healthy relationships programmes making children, young people and adults more confident in knowing what a healthy and an (un)healthy relationship looks like, and strategies to support healthy relationships.
- Bystander Intervention training which target key stakeholders in the community to build resilience against sexual violence
