George Eustice MP attended the Opening Ceremony, and was delighted that the Minister for Education, Elizabeth Truss, came to officially open the prestigious event and deliver a speech to teachers and students from places as diverse as Guam, Russia and Iran. George also read out a letter of support from the Prime Minister for the event.
The theme for this year’s ISSF was inspiration through collaboration encouraging participants to learn through team work and their shared passion for science as well as using different cultural traditions to enrich their learning experience. Throughout the event, participants were challenged, engaged and involved in scientific research - presenting their findings to the rest of the group. Students competed in a range of different scientific investigations, taking advantage of various sites of scientific interest in Cornwall, such as Camborne School of Mines, Pendennis Ship Yard, The National Lobster Hatchery, Eden Project, Falmouth Marine School and the Scottish Power Wind Farm.
The Principal of Camborne, Ian Kenworthy said: ‘We feel very proud to have held such a prestigious event. ISSF 2013 has been a wonderful experience not just as hosts, but for students, teachers, the local community and everyone involved.’
George said: ‘Camborne is the first school in Britain to host this prestigious event which is quite fitting for a town with such a great heritage in engineering and invention. Their decision to take part in such an international project is a great credit to the school and something Richard Trevithick, one of Britain’s greatest inventors and a Cornishman, would have been proud of.’
