George Eustice MP was interviewed on Martin Baillie's Radio Cornwall show following a meeting of the DEFRA select committee earlier in the week.
George called for a much fairer distribution of profit throughout the dairy supply chain. The select committee had been taking evidence from diary suppliers and retailers, including Tesco. George praised the sustainable dairy group, established by Tesco, which ensures that the price of liquid milk cover the cost to the producer. However he called on more retailers to introduce such schemes and for all milk products, such as cheese and butter, to be included.
George said "I think its a model we would like to see others follow. The real problem with the dairy industry is just a lack of fairness in the way profis are distributed throughout the supply chain. Big retailers take their cut, big processors take their cut, and the poor old farmers at the end get what little is left and are told to get back to work. We need much more fairness in the way these supply contracts are put together."
