During the recent visit of Ed Vaizey to Cornwall, George took the opportunity to show the Minister the developments underway in Hayle and discussed the town’s position as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage Site.
Recent developments on South Quay have meant UNESCO might list the Site as ‘In Danger’ and George was seeking assurance from the Government that they would support Cornwall Council in arguing that the regeneration would actually enhance the heritage of the Quay, restoring important features of Hayle’s history.
George said: "I was really glad to meet Ed Vaizey during his visit to Superfast Cornwall’s offices and to have the opportunity to show him the important regeneration work at Hayle. I am pleased that the government is going to make a powerful case for the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage Site to maintain its current status. The developments on South Quay actually enhance the historical value of the area and I hope that common sense will prevail at the forthcoming UNESCO meeting."
Ed Vaizey MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport visited Superfast Cornwall, based at the Pool Innovation Centre during the morning of Thursday, 15th May. He then visited Heartlands and held meetings with Cornwall Council.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will be discussing recommendations from its Advisory Body regarding the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site at the World Heritage Committee in Doha from 15th – 25th June 2014.
