George is a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee, who had organised the debate in Westminster Hall. The Committee welcomed Government measures extending the law to protect those attacked by dogs on private property and treating attacks on guide dogs as serious offences. However they felt that more could be done to deal efficiently with this growing problem, such as Dog Control Notices.
George welcomed the Government’s proposed measures during his speech, and said they were important steps in the right direction. He focused on dog breeding, and argued that more needed to be done to regulate irresponsible backstreet breeders. He also warned against tweaks in legislation that could not be implemented, and argued that more power to local authorities in dealing with out of control breeders could be an important start to dealing with dangerous dogs.
