Carn Brea Leisure Centre Trust has been awarded the Social Enterprise Mark which identifies them as trading for social and environmental purposes. Local MP, George Eustice received a tour of the facilities before presenting the official award to members of staff.
The Social Enterprise Mark is the brand for social enterprises and was launched on 1st February, 2010. The Mark demonstrates to customers that the business is trading to benefit people and planet.
Carn Brea is Cornwall's first Independent Charitable Trust Leisure Centre and has been working with and on behalf of the community since 2000. It has recently completed a £250,000 investment in new technology that will ensure the centre is more energy efficient and contribute to savings on its sizeable utility costs.
George was delighted to see the Centre honoured in this way, saying, "I spent much of my childhood at Carn Brea Leisure Centre and have many fond memories while I was a member of Cornwall Athletic Club.
"The creation of a local social enterprise to take over the centre ten years ago was a fantastic example of local people coming together to save a vital community asset and I am pleased to see it go from strength to strength and to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark which is well deserved."
