George Eustice MP appeared on Radio 4's 'The Week in Westminster' programme on Saturday, explaining why he believes the AV system would be disastrous for our politics.
Rebutting a confused and confusing argument from the pro-AV spokesman, Peter Hain, George said, "I accept that we need to do things to restore faith in politics. I for one would like to see more free votes in parliament, I believe in the power to recall MPs who behave badly, but I don't think this change would enhance trust in politics - it will result in more political stitch-ups. It will mean more broken promises. Parties will go into elections promising the earth, knowing that they will be able to abandon those promises behind closed doors in negotiations. People feel that that happened to some extent with this current coalition, and that's the reality of coalitions - parties have to compromise and drop certain policies, and I don't think people want to see that become the norm."
Commenting on the progress of the No2AV campaign, George said, " I'm confident we'll win because fundamentally we've got a very clear, passionate belief that we should keep our current system because the person who wins is the one who gets the most votes. As soon as you look into the AV system it just doesn't stack up."
