George was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Duchy College Rosewarne, and to talk to Agriculture students about the current issues affecting the farming industry.
George spoke briefly about his own experiences as an agricultural student and his ten years working in the industry before his move in to politics. He then covered various topics including the Common Agricultural Policy, animal welfare, Fairtrade, food security and fuel prices with a question and answer session at the end.
Work-Based Environmental Farm Conservation Diploma Level 2 student Ross Hichens, 19, from Penzance said: “It was a really worthwhile talk; it was good to hear George’s views on the farming issues especially because of his background. I certainly learnt more about what’s going on.”
The talk was organised by Phil Pengelly, Course Manager for Agriculture who has known George since their days in the Young Farmers and as students, studying at Cornwall College.
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College of which Duchy College is part, said: “This proved an excellent insight for the students. We hope that George will come and visit us again.”
George said, "I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Duchy College, and to speak to some of the students there. Food security has once again become an issue, and people are realising that we need to garner more and more of our produce from this country. We need to do as much as we can to support our young farmers as they look to set up businesses and secure our food for the future.”
