George Eustice MP was delighted to welcome the Olympic Torch to Heartlands as part of their 12-hour 'Flame Festival' celebrations. George said, "Olympic organisers made a big mistake by leaving Camborne and Redruth off the official torch relay route but I was delighted that Amy James put things right by bringing her torch back to her home towns so local people could be part of the day's celebrations. The Heartlands Olympic event was packed and really stole the show demonstrating that we know how to do things properly in Camborne and Redruth."
Amy, from Hayle was nominated as she has overcome the difficulties presented by type one diabetes to fulfil a lifelong ambition of becoming a sailing instructor. She now volunteers for the sea cadets and girl guides teaching old and young alike, including children with disabilities.
To celebrate the Olympic relay, Heartlands staged the 'Flame Festival', presenting an exciting and vibrant mix of music, dance, theatre, acrobatics, workshops and more. The finale of the evening saw an awe-inspiring fire and aerial show ending with fireworks and the lighting of a 30ft high flame sculpture, shaped like a miner. Thousands of people turned out to enjoy the event which was generously funded and supported by the Big Lottery Fund through Awards for All, World Heritage Site office, Cornwall Council, Visit Cornwall and local councillors.
