George was interviewed by Emily Maitlis on the BBC's flagship daily news programme, Newsnight, where he was questioned on what the country can expect from David Cameron's speech on Europe and the realities of European reform.
He stated that he felt there were several areas of policy where the EU had developed beyond its remit and where the Government could 'renegotiate Britain's relationship' with the EU, such as social, economic, crime and justice legislation. He also said that 'if you do want a new settlement with Europe you've got to get behind the Conservatives.'
Before George's appearance, the former Belgian Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt, argued that the British Government's aims for it's future relationship with the EU were impossible to achieve and that other EU member states would not accept them. George contended that there would be plenty of scope for renegotiation, that 'we need a much more mature debate about this' from other EU states and that 'we shouldn't tolerate this no no no attitude.'
George said that Britain could enter negotiations with the EU on a strong footing, and that Mr Cameron's speech would deliver much needed reform. For the full episode click here.
