Following the recent case of Animal Defenders International at the European Court of Human Rights, who were appealing a ban on their commercials being advertised on Television and Radio because of their political nature, George has written an article for ConservativeHome in which he states the need for change in current law on broadcast political advertising.
George stated the case for allowing political adverts to appear on television and pointed out that political adverts are permitted all over the world from Australia to Eastern Europe. He emphasised that we have some of the most draconian laws on political advertising in the world, but that if we changed those laws we would not see an American-style situation ‘attack ads’, and that this is a rather lazy assumption which simply would not convert to British political culture. Instead George argued that, as children can watch advertisements at 6:30 in the morning whilst their parents are still in bed, so grown-ups should be trusted to watch political advertisements. He also highlighted how previous legislation concerning party spending would not see those with the deepest pockets getting the most exposure.
