Flicka has been helping abandoned animals rebuild their lives for almost twenty years. George met with the directors of the Foundation who are currently looking after over 70 horses and donkeys and during the visit adopted a donkey named Tabitha, who had experienced devastating cruelty until she was rescued 2 years ago.
The Foundation gained charity status in 2007 and operates a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year such as sponsored walks, open days, coffee mornings and pyjama rides. The centre has a tea room and gift shop and has recently received a grant to build a classroom. Alongside this, they have established links with a variety of other organisations such as the WI and they have done some brilliant work with children and adults with learning difficulties. They produce their own newsletter and their website can be found by clicking here.
George said "Rescue centres like the Flicka Foundation near Mabe play a vital role in providing a new home for donkeys and ponies that have suffered mistreatment in life. In recent years there has been a worrying increase in donkeys being imported from countries such as Romania which have often not been cared for properly and this has put new demands on rescue centres. I was delighted to see the good work being done by Julie, Donna, Lorrie and all the volunteers at Flicka."
